The Cabrio Bread Box, plus it’s Frank Gehry Week!

image
Just featured in Food Network Magazine’s 2011 Gift Guide is Legnoart’s Cabrio Bread Box - it’s made with light birch wood and features a weighted “eco-leather” lid with stainless steel trim. A very sleek addition to any modern kitchen and on sale this week from Pure Modern.

We’re also taking a look at Frank Gehry’s Easy Edges Collection from Vitra, pictured below. Made with corrugated cardboard and natural hardwood, this series was originally designed from 1969-72, but now fully available in official recreations by the Vitra Design Museum of Germany. We have offered the miniature Wiggle Chair for some time now, but now have the full size version for sale as well as the funky Wiggle Stool and the nesting Low Table Set.

The New Fall Colors are In

image

Ok, so maybe not your traditional fall colors but we do have new additions to Paul Loebach’s Distortion Candle line (pictured above) as well as some shockingly bright new arrivals in the form of Harry Allen’s Silicone ”Lock Keychain” and ”Key Keychain,” each cast from original 18th and 20th century locks (seen below).

Not All Those Who Wander…

image
image

A pleasant find amid all the gadgetry was the trading company Journey, and their unique selection of furniture and homewares. Pictured above, the interlocking Puzzle Stool/Side Table, hand-carved and designed to work with each other.

Pictured below are their takes on a traditional side table - the Austin and Lamu Side Tables are each hand carved from sustainable mango wood and provide a perfect combination of rustic and modern design elements.

The Next Evolution in Flexible Design

image
image
We spotted a slick new take on the classic folding chair, it’s the Flux Chair from Flux (who else) and it’s designed to “cleverly combine the practical advantages of foldable furniture with the looks of a classic design chair.” It is designed to hold up to 160 kg (over 350+ pounds) so that answers our first question. And it’s possible to assemble or break down in only seconds, making its foldability actually functional.

Space-Saving Transformer Furniture

image
A couple of nice space-saving ideas found over at treehugger and showcased in the NY Times, this “transformer furniture” is designed for use in small or cramped city apartments. First up, although not technically a true transforming piece, Jonathan Adler’s Gossip Bench is a versatile little shelf/TV stand/seat/nightstand that could be at home in any setting, really. While Carolina George’s Folding Dining Table (pictured below) is an ingenious curio shelf that uses the glass as a folding tabletop. My hope is that one day everything will be this efficient but until then, be sure to visit the designer’s websites.

Brighten Up Your Living Space..

Lighten any room with these two new side tables from Paul Loebach - the Gradient Table (pictured right) offers four soft, ascending shades of blue with a quirky but still very appealing construction. For slightly more function with your form, the Nesting Tables/Step Stools (pictured left) were inspired by the simple versatility of American Shaker furniture and each open at the top with safety-hinged lids for inconspicuous storage.

Now Available: Recycled Furniture & Lighting from Shiner!

image

We first saw Shiner’s unique line of furniture and lighting back in January’s NYIGF, so it’s exciting to finally offer their unorthodox brand of decor made from completely recycled, reclaimed and otherwise environmentally responsible materials. Their striking array of cardboard and styrofoam lighting casts a warm glow that serves as a sure-fire conversation starter. They also offer pressed plywood and hardwood seating available in multiple finishes - truly something for every corner of the room. See their full collection on Pure Modern right here!

Be Brilliant, Recycle Your Christmas Lights

Everyone surely has a bundle of old holiday lights laying around collecting dust. We use them once a year, spend hours untangling, testing bulbs, and give up when they no longer work.  Instead of wasting space, go green this holiday and recycle.  Here are 2 companies with a great recycling program.  You can also check your local community for other recycling alternatives.

In the giving mood? Christmas Light Source donates the recycle program’s proceeds to Marine Toys For Tots Foundation.
The additional 50% match on donations from the program is absolutely brilliant!!  Read [HERE] for additional details on how the program works.

Holiday LEDs also offers a nice recylcing program. Trade in your old lights for 25% off.  Click [HERE] for details

Retro Mod XMas Tree Planted

Living in a small space is always challenging when you attempt to incorporate holiday decor and the like into your home. Here’s a clever idea to make a vintage collectable aluminum tree shine while minding your space.

Retro 4’ Evergleam Aluminum Tree [large selection on eBay]+ Stainless Steel Blomus Planter [available at puremodern.com]

Go simple, go small, and give it some height with a stainless planter.  To make your tree shine during the day, consider placing your aluminum tree next to a window with plenty of sun. For nighttime, a color changing LED base light will do the trick. To top off your holiday season, refer to previous post “Mini Yule Log” and enjoy your holiday!

The Latest in Geek-Chic Furniture

Space Invaders has always one of those seminal favorites that inspires a feverish amount of fan art and craftwork. But a couple of nifty designs have been circling the blog-o’space lately that merit some attention:

The first is still just a love seat prototype, but anyone willing to step forward and help Mr. Igor Chak will surely find a legion of buyers hurriedly measuring the dimensions of their (mother’s) basement in anticipation. Next to that, if you look closely you can recognize the DIY handiwork of “ushanz” found over at Etsy (which managed to stay on sale for a full 3 days).

image

While we’re on the subject, it seems appropriate to showcase one of the internet’s finest examples of DIY craftsmanship - the fully functioning NES Coffee Table/Controller/Storage Box! Ok so the name might need a little work, but you can head over to Kyle Downes’ ”Ultra Awesome” blog post for complete details on how to build your own!

More Exciting Additions from Pure Modern!

Ok, so new Dining Chairs may not be the most exciting of possible additions, but at Pure Modern we’re always adding sleek furniture like this and it might not always be obvious when we do. So among all the juicy additions of late, here are a few interesting designs, starting with the Taft Dining Chair and its multiple finishes pictured below.

image

We feature something original for every room of the house, and frequently add cool new pieces such as these: the Sydney Stackable Chair, the Arden Occasional Lounge and the Jasper Side Chair (pictured below from left to right).

Not sure this is PETA approved…

roadkill wide.jpg

But as I start looking for new rugs for the living room… this one is at the top of my list—the ROADKILL Rug designed by Dutch design firm OOOMS is now available for a mere 3400 euros (shipping globally for just 7.50.... ) and really who can’t justify a 3407.50 euros to have a simulated flattened fox on the sitting room floor!?!? Click thru for the closeup of this faux carnage.
